Yes, Frodo is
holding a Brass Rat

The MIT class ring

Not the One Ring. The other one — heavier, harder to lose, and it does not turn you invisible so much as permanently identifiable to other alumni across a crowded room.

The Brass Rat is named for the beaver on its bezel — nature's engineer, and MIT's mascot since 1914. Chosen, the story goes, for its industry; also, notably, an animal that dams rivers without being asked.

The poster promised one ring to rule them all, and that is roughly the claim — not merely the four years spent earning it, but every other engineering programme and everyone who came out of one. Modesty was never quite the point.
