Hi Folks,

This is a followup to our meeting last night. I've set up a mail drop
for us

	ugresearch@mogli.rutgers.ed

Anything sent to this address will reach everyon who signed up last
night. I will not moderate the list, but I have some guidelines for
what should appear there. The info posted should be related only to
special problems projects and/or group technical projects. It should
not be repository for general news. Why? My disk space is limited and
such posting will clutter the disk.

Speaking of which, I'll be soon setting up an archive on my home page
which will contain all our past correspondence.

So far we've talked about the following as project possibilities;

1) REMOTE CONTROL PROFESSOR CONTROLLER: each student has a transmitter
with two buttons. Button 1 says "speed up" and button 2 says "slow down".
A box at the front of the room registers the votes and indicates
whether to speed up or slow down. This could be a multiple person
project (maximum of 3 I think)

2) WEB DISTRIBUTION OF COURSE MATERIAL: the student would prepare a
lesson (module/lab, topic) for distribution over the WWW. The
parameters of exactly what would be involved are open. What I'm
looking for is a self-contained tutorial unit that students could use
to learn material in various courses or extend their understanding.
If enough courses could be covered, I believe this could blossom into
a hallmark NSBE project with (I'm not exagerating) WORLD CLASS IMPACT.

3) CAMERA ON A BOOM: A remote access camera with a controller would be
used to move a camera around and look "from afar". I gave the example
of a camera in my office with which I could look at papers, but the
context could be anything really. This would be agood project for
about 2 or three students.

4) SKI-DOMETER: A device which could be mounted on a ski which measured
snow speed. Current versions are mechanical. I envision something
a bit more sophisticated which uses optics (leds) to measure speed

Now, here are the caveats. It looked like more than 40 people in the
room last night from various disciplines. Unfortunately, I'm only one
person, so I don't see having more tan about 5 or so students as
special problems students under my sole direction. HOWEVER, if we can
figure out a way to do group projects along the lines of the web
distribution stuff above, we might be able to achieve departmental
"buy-in" from various departments. That is, your home departments
would LOVE to have such web distribution of coursework and maybe we
could work out a deal where I'm the secondary advisor and you hook up
directly with a prof in your department.

So that's the scoop. If you're interested in doing special problems,
submit a proposal to this group so we as a group can tear it apart
and rebuild it into something wonderful. Post questions/clarifiactions
etc as well.

If you wnat more detail on my background (technical) chck out my web
page (http://winwww.rutgers.edu/pub/about/people/staff/crose/crose.html).

Cheers,

Chris

Hi,

I'll put you on the list. The mailing group is
ugresearch@mogli.rutgers.edu and I'll post your last suggestion to it.
However, I'm not sure I see the relation between traction and area.
Larger area means less force per unit area. Friction is proportional
to force per unit area. I do understand that two wheels tend to
induce more frictional drag more than one, but even there, I'm
not sure of the physics.

In any case, were you to explore this, we (or you and a mech E prof
and me) would need to understand/figure out the physics of the
situation. Please send further explanation if you'd like (to the
group). I may end up making sub groups by discipline, by the way if
that's a collectively good idea.

Cheers

Chris

My name is Hussan Peavey, I'm a fourth year M.E, that has many creative
Ideas... the one which I would love to work on is a design of a single Back
wheel for a car, or sports car.. that would need one tire, and should
increase the speed of the car... due to the increase in surface area, and
traction.

I'm not on your list, a friend referred me to you..... my email is hussan
@eden.... please get in touch with further infomation...Thankyou

I also willing to work on projects if time allows it!

Hi Jude,

Sorry, but I won't be in tomorrow. As for communications, it's really
very simple. The trick is knowing what is really important.

For example, the sifting property of impulses is really important
and so is the bit about duality and multiplication in time domain
mapping to convolution in frequency and vice versa. It you know
those basic properties COLD then you're way ahead of the game
in AM (and NBFM) modulation. You should know in your sleep
at 3am that the transform of cosine looks like goal posts at
the frequency of the sinusoid. Likewise, you should know that
sine looks almost the same, but with one of the posts pointing down.

By the way, the sifting property is the one with an impulse
when convolved with anything else gives a shifted
version of the "else" it was convolved with.... for example

delta(t-t_0)*g(t) (where * is convolution) gives
g(t-t_0) as a result owing to the sifting property.

Thus when we multiply g(t)cos(w_0 t) you get something that looks
like G(w-w_0) + G(w+w_0) in frequency domain because you convolve
G(w) with two goalpost delta functions.

In any case, almost all FM and AM modulation can be boiled down to a
few linear systems facts (there are a few others like the properties
of transforms of real signals... conjugate symmetry... which are
useful for singl=sideband AM... but it's not a large number of facts).
You could start by asking me some specific questions. It's MUCH
easier to use email since I'm not in and free that often.

Now as for special problems, I'll leave that ball in your court.
Suggest a project when you want to (post to
ugresearch@mogli.rutgers.edu) or express interest in one of the
projects that pops up on the group.

Gotta go... will be away this weekend so I won't be able
to respond to mail... sorry bout that.

Cheers,

Chris

HI Hussan,

What I was talking about with the wheel business is that we'd need to
specifically figure out the physics involved, then look at the lore
(there's a whole body of "lore" for designing race cars that is not
necessarily based on analytic physics, but rather, experience) and see
what's what.

By analogy, there is a whole lore about throwing a baseball (curves,
sliders etc) and then somebody actually analyzed it (Terry Bahill at U
Arizona) and figured out some of the basic principles.

So, what I'm suggesting is that with anything we do we need to
understand the underlying physics in order to be a valid special
problems.

As for the car battery, that could be done. However, I think a more
interesting project would be to design a car-theft protection device
which was more secure than what we've got now. What I'm talking about
is that anybody can listen to your code and if they duplicate it
(radio frequency tones) they can turn off your alarm (or open your garage
door, etc).

A more secure way to do this would be to have a query-response system
where you press your button to send the unlock message and the lock
sends a question back to you which you must answer. If you answer it
correctly, then the lock unlocks. If not, then the alarm wails. When
I say "you" I really mean the hand-held transmitter is formulating
answers to the questions.

This would be a lovely EE sort of project but not much ME content (the
connection of an alarm circuit to a switch which shut off battery
power or something else is pretty trivial).

So, I encourage you to start putting pencil to paper and trying to
analyze (using basic ME/Physics principles) all your ideas. For
example, you mention handling is better with a lighter wheel. WHY IS
THAT? I can think of a few physical reasons (which I'm sure you can
come up with too), but I'm not really clear on the "handling" issue.

How does one define handling? (think about this). What` is "good"
handling. All of these must be quantified.

Cheers,

Chris

PS: Please post responses to the group at ugresearch@mogli.rutgers.edu
so everyone can get a crack at the special problems thought process
and so that collectively we can distill good ideas into better ones.

you might be right, But if you create a wheel that was as light as to sigle
wheels, I thought it would in crease handling also... I'm not sure...I guess
we could go over that more!

Another Idea! I always tried to figure out a way to stop the theft of car....
The best Idea I came up with were, a battery that dis- ingaged when the car
was turn off... image the two connectors to the battery... that are
computerized, and can only be reingaged with a code... like on the lock of a
car! i belive this might be more feasible... but also vage in great detail!
making you help and anyones elses to confront this the better!

Subgroups sounds find
for this idea i need a EE's help!
more Ideas to come! need help to make them work though1

thank you Hussan!

HI Folks,

Did you know that Marilynn Wylie is doing her postdoc at WINLAB?
Marilynn is a relatively recent graduate of U Penn (Phila) and has
done work in estimation (her specialty) and more recently various
aspects of wireless communications. Among her many accomplishments,
she was also the first African American woman to graduate from U Pa
with a doctorate in EE.

I'm sure she'll have more to add to this, along with possible special
problems projects, but in the meantime you can check out her web page
at

Hi Chris,

I am interested in working on a web page for a special problems project.
MEET has a page but hasn't been updated in a while. I'm in the process of
finding out how I can get access to the source files so we can build up the
idea you gave about educational info.

I am only typing with my one good hand at the moment so I'm not writing in a
lot of detail, but when I get some more time I'll get back to you with some
specifics on what I want to do and give you some more info about the
organization.

One good hand!?!?!?!? What happened?

In any case, let me know what you find and then let's
try to cobble it into a topic before the term
ends. There's been a lot of positive response on
this front and I think we can make this collectively
into a really nice project for NSBE with worldwide significance
and recognition. I'm hoping you students will lead the profs
of the world into the next century with a bang when it comes
to how to present material. When you think about it,
we've been learning in basically the same way for
probably more than 10,000 years. COuld be that lecture
and lab is optimal for humans, but probably not. We now
have a chance to bring serious education to a lot
of people at very low cost, so we should figure
out how to do it right.... which is where you come in.

Do you feel the pressure yet? :)
