Nick Carter is a graduate student in his first year of the Ph.D. program in Anthropology at Brown University. He holds a B.A. in Philosophy from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas, and an M.A. in Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin, where he focused on Maya art and epigraphy under David Stuart. His master's thesis, The 'emblem' monuments of Structure J at Monte Albán, Oaxaca, Mexico, proposes a new interpretation for an enigmatic group of Late Preclassic Zapotec monuments and discusses their relevance to issues of state formation in the Valley of Oaxaca. At Brown, Nick is studying archaeology and epigraphy under the capable supervision of Stephen Houston, and looks forward to his first field season at El Zotz this coming summer.
