In terms of territorial expansion, sulhan vs. anwatan meant those that happen by treaty vs. those that happen by force.
By treaty- Forced conversion generally did not happen when it was made by treaty. Amongst the people who were left, the fellaheen stayed behind; others who were richer could pick up and leave to the Byzantine heartlands.
By force- Their treasure could be take and they may be forced into conversion
