The Williams article on Nubian Fortresses lies at one end of the spectrum that sees the fortresses as either military or economic in function. Where does he fall, and how does he support his argument? What does his use of sources do to either strengthen or weaken his overall understanding of the political and military situation in Egypt itself in the early Middle Kingdom? How does Williams's reading of the fortress system differ from that offered by Kemp (from last week's readings)?
