Thompson Warren: i want in unless there is a fundraising party committee called "Party like the Egyptians"
Yeah I wanted to be in group! Thanks Thompson.... just wanted to clear up that I definitely wanted to be on this one! Also I agree about party fundraiser. just saying.

anya eber: I want to be part of this committee but I am having trouble figuring out how to sign up for it. I have a background in costume construction and I’m currently working for the main stage so I can probably get us some materials and help in that department if we need it.

Prof. B: So I'm not sure of the legality of the "Party like the Egyptians", at least not if it's official. BUT I think we HAVE to make a mix tape for this party anyway (and yes, I realize I just dated myself - I meant a playlist of course). Thompson, I think you just got elected to a committee of one, but everyone should weigh in...

aeber: According to our class session on Thursday we split ourselves into two research groups; Egyptians and Hittites. Correct me if I’m wrong but as it stands the people in each group are: Egyptians: Eric Chan, Cecilia Bahamon, Anya Eber, Hiu Wai Lee, Morgan Li. Hittites: Nathaniel Gilbert, Gerica, Spencer Parsons, Thompson Warren. We also decided to have two committee leaders Eric Chan and myself (Anya Eber).

Cecilia B: p. 41 of the H reading has an image of Egyptian bronze scale armor that looks like it could be replicated by drawing (or stamping) scales onto a long t-shirt. What do you think?
Morgan: I found a great book with images of weapons and armor of different civilizations in the near east subdivided into time periods. The book is called: Armies of the Ancient Near East, Stillman & Tanis.
For the Ramesside period the dress of soldiers included this pleated linen kilt with a placard-like thing in the middle, and a horizontal torso wrap. They used a rectangular shield and a variety of weapons. For the archers we'll need to make quivers they can carry on their backs. Archers were bald (interesting).
For the Hittites, the Kadesh reliefs show plenty of Hittites and their chariots. They carried 3 people, a driver and 2 soldiers on either side of him. In looks they do not seem to differ very much from Egyptian chariots, but maybe that's because the Egyptians who made the reliefs just decided to homogenize all chariots. I read in another book about Hittites(which was actually very biased against the Egyptians) that included some differences.
I went to the Joukowsky Institute to try to do some research in their library, but unfortunately the library is super spread out across the 2nd floor and 10 ft high. There was no catalogue so I just pulled books that I could see were related to Egypt/Hittites, but since the shelves are so tall I am sure I missed plenty.

Hiu Wai: Some updates from what I have found at the Rock recently. I got a book called Warfare in Ancient Egypt. It includes detailed information over New Kingdom weaponry, such as soldiers' head and body protection, shields, bows, arrows, quivers, axes, swords and javelins. There are also photos that will help as we try to re-construct the weapons. Although the text covers a wide range of materials, I think we should try to narrow down and focus on the ones that were used in the early 19th dynasty or even in the reign of Ramesses II.
I also got two other books about Ramesses II's temple at Abu Simbel. I find them especially useful since they include pictures of the actual Battle of Qadesh reliefs on the temple walls. These scenes range from the 'big picture' of the battle itself, chariot fights, and the Pharaoh subduing the enemies. One author included some re-constructed drawings of the reliefs that clarify many details. We can certainly model against these reliefs to re-construct some armor and weapons.

Prof. B: I haven't been able to track it down yet, but apparently there was an art exhibition in Europe a few years ago on Hittite stuff that included some weaponry that might be useful. It's in German but pictures should be helpful if we can find it...

Hiu Wai:
I managed to locate some images of excavated axe and spear heads, daggers and swords with accurate dimensions from the New Kingdom. I think the most important things to know at present are the number of troops in each division and whether all five divisions carry the same weaponry. As soon as these have been figured out we can start making the weapons.
P.S. I saw tons of cardboard boxes in the mail room yesterday. Does anyone know who should we get in touch with if we want to use them? Or can we just pull them out from the recycling cart?

thompson: Didn't someone have a list of all the standards with their Egyptian names
Morgan: I have images of standards but they don't have names. I think someone who knows Middle Egyptian is just going to write the names of the divisions on the standards.
I have taken some photos of the page in my book with Egyptian standards. Hopefully this will be useful.

I think something like C would be fine.
Morgan: Seems like we will still need to make archer's wrist guards, wheels for the chariot, kilts, sashes, sherden helmets/shields?, arrows? (I think functional bows and arrows in the wrong hands could lead to disaster...)
And also the King's wardrobe, which I assume is going to be pretty elaborate?
