Introduction:

Hi! I'm a junior concentrating in urban studies with a growing interest in archeology, especially archeology of cities. When I arrive home in Portland on breaks from school, my family and I drive across town from the airport to our house. I-5 winds along the Willamette River and crosses a high bridge, providing a beautiful view of downtown Portland and the riverfront. More than touching down on familiar ground in an airplane or even driving into my own driveway, seeing the city (usually at night, its skyline illuminated, with the dark hills behind it and the river below it) is the moment I feel like I have arrived in a place that is familiar and in which I belong. I'm curious as to how and why cities - often considered nuisances, at best, and menaces, at worst - can evoke familiarity and belonging for some people.
